![5 things we expect from kindergarteners that may not be developmentally appropriate 👀
Kindergarten expectations have shifted a lot over the years but child development has not changed.
Many children are still developing the motor, attention, and regulation skills needed for some of the expectations we see in early classrooms today.
Struggling with these skills does not mean a child is “behind.” It often means they are developing exactly as expected. What do we often expect that we shouldn’t?
1️⃣ Sit still for long periods
Many 4 to 5 year olds still need frequent movement and sensory input to stay regulated and attentive.
2️⃣ Write letters neatly and independently
Fine motor skills are still developing. Many kinders are still learning how to control pencils and form letters.
3️⃣ Sustain attention for long academic tasks
Young children learn best through play, movement, and short bursts of engagement.
4️⃣ Manage big emotions independently
Self regulation skills are still emerging. Co regulation with adults is developmentally appropriate.
5️⃣ Follow complex multi step instructions every time
Executive functioning skills such as working memory, planning, and sequencing are still developing at this age.
When we understand development, we can support children in ways that actually help them grow.
