On the Horizon

Early Eating Disorder Risk in Neurodiverse Youth

Federici Headshot 2025 (1).jpg

Drawing on current research, clinical experience, and case-based examples, this talk explores how restrictive eating, sensory sensitivities, rigidity, and anxiety may present differently in neurodiverse youth and how these presentations are often minimized or misattributed until risk has escalated. Particular attention is given to early indicators of ARFID and other eating disorders that may be overlooked in autistic, ADHD, and other neurodivergent populations. The workshop also addresses practical decision-making challenges, including when to monitor, when to intervene, and when to refer for specialized care. Throughout, the focus remains on early identification, collaborative formulation, and risk-sensitive care that supports both neurodivergent identity and recovery-oriented outcomes.

This joint clinician–parent presentation explores ARFID and neurodivergence through lived family experience and a neuroaffirming clinical lens. We will examine how neuroaffirming care in assessment and treatment meaningfully translates into at-home feeding strategies, including responsive feeding, parent- and child-led interventions, and demand-reduction approaches for PDA-profile ARFID. Participants will leave with concrete ways to align therapeutic goals with nervous-system safety, family realities, and developmental needs — strengthening collaboration rather than increasing pressure around food.

This presentation is intended for allied health professionals, teachers & parents
