Protecting Psychology Standards in Ontario

At WonderTree, as psychologists and psychological associates practicing across Ontario, we are deeply concerned about the recent regulatory changes proposed by the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO). These changes represent a drastic departure from the high standards that have long safeguarded the public. The CPBAO’s proposed changes would lower Ontario to some of the weakest standards in the country.

What's at Risk?

  • Reduction in Training → 75% reduction in training. Hands-on clinical training reduced from 5,000-7,500 hours to as little as 1,900 hours

  • Loss of key safeguards → removal of the ethics and oral exams eliminates vital checkpoints.

  • Lack of defined competencies → Psychologists will self-declare their practice areas (e.g., neuropsychology, forensics, couples, children) without oversight

Why it Matters?

Drastic cuts to training → leaving the public exposed to misdiagnosis, repeat assessments, and inappropriate treatment.
Ontarians trust that when they see a psychologist, they are getting safe, ethical, and highly trained care. Lowering standards undermines that trust and places vulnerable people, especially children and those in crisis,
at risk.
